There are 2 types of capacitors
1.Polarized capacitor(pc)
2.Nonpolarized capacitor (NPC)
Function of polarized capacitor-
1. Stores charge
2. Filters the signal
OK condition of polarized capacitor-
We check the polarized capacitor by setting the multimeter to 20k Ω. If the capacitor comes back showing some value from both the sides then the polarized capacitor is OK.
Faulty condition of polarized capacitor-
1. If a polarized capacitor does not discharge anything from both sides then it is open (bad).
2. If the value keeps increasing and decreasing on both sides of polarized capacitor then it is leakage.
3. If the polarized capacitor gives beep sound at the continuity point then it is short.

Function of nonpolarized capacitor-
1.Passes AC current
2.Stops DC
3. Resists changes in voltage
OK condition of nonpolarized capacitor-
Nonpolarized capacitor is checked by setting the multimeter on continuity point. If the nonpolarized capacitor does not discharge anything from both the sides then the nonpolarized capacitor is OK.
Faulty condition of nonpolarized capacitor-
1. Check the non-polarized capacitor by setting the multimeter on the continuity point. If the non-polarized capacitor gives beep sound from both the sides, then it is short.
2. If a nonpolarized capacitor absorbs value from both sides, it is a leakage.
Note- 100% testing of capacitors is done outside the PCB board.
